Introduction / History

The Adonara people live on Adonara Island, part of the Lesser Sunda Islands in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. They are part of the Austronesian family and share cultural and linguistic ties with neighboring groups such as the Lamaholot. Historically, Adonara was ruled by local kingdoms that interacted with Portuguese and Dutch traders during the colonial era. Their island heritage has shaped them as seafarers and farmers, with traditions passed down through oral histories and clan structures.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Adonara live in coastal and inland villages, with livelihoods centered on farming, fishing, and small-scale trade. Rice, corn, cassava, and coconuts are staple foods, while fish provides essential protein. Men often fish or work in agriculture, while women manage household gardens, care for children, and participate in weaving. Family life is organized around extended kinship networks, with clans playing a central role in social and cultural identity.

Celebrations include weddings, harvest festivals, and religious holidays, often marked by communal meals, music, and dance. Traditional weaving and storytelling remain important cultural expressions, while hospitality is a valued trait, with guests welcomed generously.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Adonara people identify primarily with Christianity. There is a moderate Evangelical presence. Many Adonara blend formal religious practices with traditional animistic beliefs, including respect for ancestral spirits and rituals tied to nature. While the gospel has been introduced, discipleship and biblical teaching remain shallow, and strong indigenous Christian leadership is still developing.

What Are Their Needs?

The Adonara face both spiritual and physical challenges. Spiritually, they require deeper engagement with the gospel in ways that speak to their cultural context. Translation of Scripture into local dialects and discipleship resources would strengthen understanding and faith.

Physically, access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities remains limited, with many communities marginalized within Indonesia's development. Infrastructure such as clean water, transportation, and reliable markets would greatly improve daily life. Holistic mission efforts that combine gospel proclamation with practical support are essential for their flourishing.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Adonara will encounter Jesus Christ in a personal and transformative way, moving beyond nominal identification with Islam or Christianity to vibrant discipleship.
Pray asking the Lord to raise up local believers who can lead their communities with wisdom and courage.
Pray for translation of the Bible into local dialects, so that God's Word may speak directly to their hearts.
Pray for their physical needs, including access to healthcare, education, and clean water, that their communities may thrive.
